In Griseville, the children are exploited by the Rats. They are prisoners, working day and night without end until they are completely exhausted. One day, they decide to take their destiny into their own hands and flee on a makeshift raft. Thus begins a long journey filled with surprises.
Through a succession of paintings, Hop et Rats! illustrates an initiatory tale that celebrates the victory of art and beauty over the absurd and oppression. Librettist David Martins and Thierry Pécou have created a dreamlike world in which children converse as equals with artists (Chagall, Pushkin, Tchaïkovsky, and others). As in Saint-Exupery’s Little Prince, the poetry of this universe touches the child that is within each of us. <br>Playing on certain references – songs, rap and world music – the score is built around songs written for the children’s choir, full of onomatopoeia, rhythmic acrobatics and choreographed instrumental passages.
Ivan Morane’s style of directing involves the body, politics and social concerns, while respecting the world of childhood. He makes the singers citizens of the world and helps them evolve by expressing enchantment.
