In classical Indian music, virtuosity that does not eliminate all traces of technical prowess is considered as mere gesticulation. Debashish Bhattacharya is part of the very small circle of instrumentalists who have managed to attain this high level of artistry and philosophy. <br>From the haughty point of view of tradition, Debashish is seen as something of a heretic. From his early childhood, he preferred the Hawaiian guitar to the sitar! The fascination for this instrument came from Debashish’s own father, a theatre singer in Calcutta, after the instrument was brought into the local artistic milieu in the 1930s. After formal training in sitar and guitar with the greatest masters, Debashish has today become the most inspired artist of his generation. Simple, refined and inventive, Debashish designs and builds his own guitars: the Chaturangi, the 4-couloured guitar with 24 rhythmic strings; the Gandharvi, a “cosmic” guitar with 14 extremely taut strings in order to play thumris; and his latest, the little Anadi, a joyous 4-string guitar.
