Simha Arom (to advise musical) : diffusion of the recordings of the Aka Pygmies
Through their polyrhythmic structures, the Pygmies seem to master a level of musical differentiation and complexity never reached by another culture. A mosaic of different rhythms, this concert (dreamed up by Pierre Laurent Aimard) alternates between recordings of the AKA Pygmies selected by musicologist Simha Arom, and works for piano by Gyorgy Ligeti and for percussion by Steve Reich. It brings together different musical cultures and influences, and aims above all to be a celebration of rhythm and beat. “African Rhythms” makes it surprisingly clear that the immense wealth of music from Africa not only gave birth to all modern, jazz and Afro-Cuban music, but has also inspired and considerably enriched contemporary musical composition.
