Waits and Weill : it’s not just by chance that the two bards of rogue lyricism have come together. Fifty years apart, each of them had already come one step nearer the other. Tom Waits in his operas, Kurt Weill with his off-beat “songs”. Unless it’s exactly the opposite. They both extol love laments, the last mouthful of whisky, and other minute pleasures. The same language to express a mixture of drunkenness, challenges or just being tired of living.<br>In the arena of the song recital, thanks to the arrangers’ sleight of hand, the parallel sticks out a mile. The same sophistication, the same jazzy, slightly off beat melodic line, mixed with strains of cabaret, brilliantly interpreted by the Belgian group Ictus.
