When one listens to to-day’s music, one is caught out by new ways of composing it. That is what St Etienne’s Contemporary Orchestral Ensemble invites us to do with its program which brings together the works of four great contemporary composers.
With Xu Yi, the West faces the East, which is looking at the West. Dufourt has left polyphonic thinking in favour of a “heterophonic” piano concerto taking the form of slow-acting meditation towards the conquest of a new plasticity of sound.<br>Hurel has written a kind of non-concerto for vibraphone and its orchestral duplicate, working with mirrors on the ambiguity of sound situations. As for Patrick Marcland, that discreet, demanding figure of serial music, he has avoided any narrative dimension in favour of incisive writing which acts as the developer of inspired imaginings.
