Carnatic singing is used for worship in Southern India. Using unusually brilliant mastery, which nonetheless remains subordinate to the original spiritual aim, it builds up in speed and vocal power in the modal scale of ragas, based on old Tamil text phonemes. Sudha Ragunathan is one of its major female singers.
